Why You Need DJ Lighting

In the pursuit of the epic DJ moment, there are lots of things to consider. You are three quarters of the way through your set, the dancefloor is packed, everyone is waiting for your next tune and when you put it on, the place goes crazy for it. Imagine that scene in a dingy room with just a domestic house light on, or in a big hall with just some spot lamps that you’ve borrowed from your brother? It just wouldn’t be the same.

DJ lighting might not be as important as the music of course, but it is critical in creating a mood and an ambience, it helps to build atmosphere and can really enhance your set. Being a DJ is about the whole experience, and you want it to be memorable, so getting your lighting right is really important.

Choose DJ lighting to suit the venue and occasion

The first thing to consider when thinking about lighting is what kind of DJ you are and what venues or events you are likely to play. You can’t afford to underdo it, or overdo it. You need to select the right rig to reflect where you are playing and what the occasion is. So in a big club on someone’s 21st birthday, you don’t want to be relying on a tiny LED plug-in mirrorball for your lighting effects. And on the flipside, for your grandparents’ silver wedding anniversary, a full rig of strobe lights and smoke machines might be considered a bit over-the-top. So whether you are working at a community centre, a proper nightclub, a trendy bar or just someone’s house, you can design a lighting rig to suit the venue accordingly.

Some venues will have a standard lighting rig set up and you will find this out when you are booked, but you don’t necessarily have to use it, and certainly, having your own lighting and knowing how it works will give you confidence and this will really be reflected in how your set goes and how you perform.

These days, there are so many options out there that you cannot fail to find a set-up that suits your style and the DJ work you are likely to undertake, and of course, there is no harm in you adjusting your system and what lighting equipment you take to each gig. At the DJ Superstore there is a wealth of options that are easy to install, not too heavy to handle so you don’t need your mates to tag along every night, and easy to program so you don’t need to spend hours getting everything prepared. And on top of that, there are plenty of affordable options too.

So your rig could consist of LED mirrorballs, moving heads, matrix lights, bar lights, strobe lighting, starclothes or UV lighting, and you might consider some accessories such as a software interface, a smoke machine or even pyrotechnics. You can chop and change what you take each time, but there is no excuse for not having the right set-up to suit the occasion or the venue you are working on. Everything is there and available.
